Tall and Lovely
You can count on these lovely flowers—no matter the soil pH, they'll bloom white, turn green in midsummer and become deep pink by fall. Plant them as an informal hedge, and let that color change shake up your late-season garden. This is a standard hydrangea. It is being trained into a tree shape, and as it grows in your garden, keep training it into this shape for a great architectural accent in your garden. Put it in a pot and plant annuals in the base for a multi-tiered display. You can also plant it right in the garden bed for a level of color above your perennials. Phantom can grow to a mature height 10' tall, so it's effective for privacy along a fence, if you're trying to make your garden feel a bit more intimate or screen an uncomfortable view into your neighbor's home. It's not a difficult shrub; it tolerates salt and urban pollution. So easy and lovely, the Royal Horticultural Society gave it the Award of Garden Merit!
