Old-Fashioned Lilac Hedge
Spring-flowering shrubs add color and fragrance to gardens and landscapes--and the Old-Fashioned Lilac is a reliable favorite. Growing 8-15 ft. tall with a 6-12 ft. spread, this deciduous shrub bursts into bloom in mid to late spring. Its lilac-purple panicles fill the air with fragrance and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowers are also excellent for cut-flower displays. Also called the common lilac, the Old-Fashioned Jumbo Lilac looks impressive when planted in small groups, as a flowering hedge or privacy screen. Deer tend to avoid. For best results, plant in well-drained soil and make sure it receives good air circulation. Grow in full sun to partial shade. Zones 3-7.
