This outstanding woody vine was selected in Hungary by Gabor Smidt (for whom it was named) and boasts huge 4" flowers of deep red with no hint of the common orange tones. It is a vigorous grower, excellent for growing on a pergola, arbor, fence, or even over a structure such as a shed you wish to conceal. Hummingbirds adore these flowers for their rich nectar, and you'll have every hummer in your neighborhood checking out your vine! Blooms midsummer into fall, especially if you remove the fruit pods and trim out excessive growth in early summer. For the first 2 years, water when dry, prune back to 6 inches in late spring, and train new growth up a support. After that, it is quite self-sufficient, sailing through drought, heat, wetness, even poor soil.
Zones 4-9, 20-30′ tall, 10′ wide, sun, 3" pot.
