Dog Tooth Violet

Delicate beauty; tough plant
Oddly named Dog Tooth Violet and Trout Lily, you wouldn't expect this to be such a beautiful plant. However the nodding, reflexive lily-shaped blooms suspended from slender stalks have a surprisingly delicate and elegant beauty about them. That's not to say the plant itself is delicate—it's exceptionally tough, thriving in chalk, clay, loam or sand, and it's virtually disease free. It likes a little shade, where it will naturalize in beautiful drifts, and is often underplanted as a very low-maintenance companion around roses and shrubs. In spring, the stalks will produce up to 10 blooms each. Deer tend not to eat Dog Tooth Violet. Erythronium 'Pagoda'
