Crested Hart's Tongue Fern

Some Whimsy for the Woods
The delightfully unusual fronds look a lot like the beloved Crissie's Bird's Nest houseplant, but this perennial is hardy enough for even a zone 5 garden. We're lucky to have a fern like Crissie's that grows outdoors—there's very few crested varieties of Hart's Tongue Fern in cultivation! It grows beautifully in shady, moist woodlands, knocking it out of the park as an exciting mass planting. Or if your dark-hued foliage is fading into the background, tuck Crested Hart's Tongue Fern in next to it to add dimension to the display. This fern is rarely of any interest to deer and other hungry animals.
