Colchicum the Giant

Bold fall color
This is not your average bulb. Instead of blooming in early spring, this sometimes-labeled "crocus bulb" is actually a fall-blooming colchicum, with massive, colorful flowers. It'll produce foliage only in spring and flowers only in fall. It's important to let the foliage grow and get enough sunlight, as the breadth and amount of fall blooms depends on how much energy the spring foliage collected. It's not a difficult process though, just repeat it along your spring borders and let the foliage fill out the display, and you'll get to enjoy all that impressive fall floral color too. The Giant is also very easy to naturalize, improving and multiplying each year. You can use this many places—the rock garden, containers, naturalized in drifts around a woodland garden… and it's rarely bothered by deer, rabbits and other woodland critters.
