When should you plant miniature hollyhocks?

Our Brilliant Mini Hollyhocks ship in spring, and can be planted any time after the last frost date for your area. We aim to send plants at the best time for planting, so you shouldn't need to store these bareroots before planting them. If there is a late frost predicted for your area, store your bareroots in a cool, dry place until after all threat of frost has passed.

How much sun does my mini hollyhock need?

Just like regular-sized hollyhocks, miniature hollyhocks perform best in full sun. Plant them in well-draining soil, in a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight per day.

What type of soil is best for miniature hollyhocks?

Loamy, well-draining soil is your best bet for successful hollyhocks-including these Brilliant Mini Hollyhocks. Work your soil well before planting your hollyhocks, aerating and working the soil to at least one foot deep to accommodate the deep roots of the hollyhocks. If your garden contains heavy clay soil, or low-quality rocky soil, add compost or loam as you work. Your hollyhocks should be planted at about an inch and a half below the soil, and their roots will grow deep underground.

How often should you water mini hollyhocks?

Miniature hollyhocks prefer consistently moist soil as they are becoming established. Water the soil twice per week as your hollyhocks grow in the first year, and don't allow the soil to dry out entirely. Water the plants at the base, as wet leaves can promote pests and disease. After the first season, hollyhocks are quite drought tolerant, and only need to be watered during long dry stretches.

Do you need to fertilize miniature hollyhocks?

Miniature hollyhocks are among the most floriferous plants of their stature, with lots of bright blooms popping up year after year. Use of a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 fertilizer or a standard garden fertilizer, can help your miniature hollyhocks produce even more flowers. Fertilize early in the season, after the plants have sprouted. A water-soluble fertilizer is the easiest to use, and produces excellent results.
