Many varieties bloom in both the spring and fall. And, these beloved plants are available in a vast variety of colors and patterns sure to suit any garden.

Botanical Name:

Hemerocallis

Most Popular Colors: The first daylilies to invade the United States were the orange variety. Horticulturalists have since created thousands of daylily varieties!

Blooming Season: Early to late summer.

Soil Preferences: Daylililes will flourish in any kind of soil, except the very wet kind. Select a spot that drains.

Landscaping Tips: Daylilies are available in such an assortment - there's a perfect daylily for any area in your yard. By choosing the right variety of daylily, you can achieve a state of constant blooming. Consider mixing spring- and summer- blooming daylilies, as well as double-blooming varieties.

Planting: Space the plants 1 to 3 feet apart, depending on variety, and keep the roots moist as the plants develop.

Care:

  • Water is vital to the success of your daylily garden. Water frequently in spring, when the plants are producing buds and branches, and through the blooming season. However, don't overwater - it's best to provide frequent surface watering.
  • After blooming season, foliage can be cut back to 5 or 6 inches.
  • Consider mulching in the spring, to assist with moisture retention and weed control.
  • For more information, go to the experts - like many of the greatest flower families, daylilies have their own fan club.
