This plant can be grown as a small tree, featured item in a foundation planting or as a colorful living fence or hedge. Small pink blooms appear in spring after the leaves appear. Purple leaf color lasts all season long and adds a beautiful contrast to the green of most landscape plants. Prunus cistena can reach a height of up to 10 feet but can easily be trimmed to a shorter height.
Cross by Prof. N.E. Hansen in Brookings S.D. in 1909. Too much shade can result in a leaf color that is more bronze green than the beautiful reddish purple leaf color.
