Where marginally hardy, plant in an area protected from drying winter winds.
Fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil.
Moderate to fast
One of the hardiest bamboos for the northern gardener. First to send up shoots (culms) in spring time. Tall sturdy culms are a rich green and hollow inside. This bamboo grows into a dense grove or screen, perfect to create a private area in your landscape. Maintains dark emerald green appearance even in the harshest winters.
Remove culms (stalks) to control growth into unwanted areas.
Named after David Bissett, Superintendent of USDA Plant Introductions Station, Savannah Georgia, 1924-1957.

Bought 2 of these a couple of years ago. We are using it to screen an unsightly area and for its looks/sound in general. Beautiful this week in the snow fall. Very hardy for this zone.

Great plant after one year it has started to spread. It did not dye back in winter and needed no mulch. I have shoots up to four feet.
