Hardy and brilliantly colored, Golden Hakone Grass is an excellent decorative grass for borders, rock walls and ponds or anywhere you'd like a splash of gold. Also known as Hakonechloa Aureola Grass, this perennial grows well in both sun and shade. Planted in a sunny spot, it will blaze a striking golden-yellow with thin green stripes; planted in full shade it will take on a lovely lime green shade. When autumn arrives, you'll be delighted by its soft pink and red hues. A slow grower, Hakonechloa Grass spreads by rhizomes and stolons, but will not "take over" a garden bed. For immediate visual impact, it's recommended to purchase a gallon-size start.

This Japanese forest grass prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Amend soil with humus before planting in the spring. In the fall, cut browning leaves or, in colder climates, cut back the entire plant and cover with mulch. The Golden Hakone is hardy grower in Zones 5-9. Golden Hakone Grass grows in a mounded fashion, with an attractive habit of spilling, making it a perfect candidate for softening border edges, container plantings, or topping rock walls. It also does well in moist environments, making it an excellent choice for enhancing water features. The bright gold and green variegated foliage grows 12-18 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide. Drought, deer, and pest resistant, this lovely Hakonechloa grass makes a striking golden counterpoint to darker colored plantings.
