Wait was worth itReview by Keith - Huntley, IL Posted on 2012-12-01 19:58:16
I planted 2 of these in the spring of 2011. They didn't look like much back then. Late this summer they finally produced their "plumage". They look great out there, very ornamental. Haven't seen any diamonds yet due to lack of dew.
Sparkling like the finest of diamonds, Diamond Grass features long and slender flower plumes that glisten in the sun. Grass plants are terrific focal points throughout the late summer, fall and winter in the yard and field. It provides great ground cover, and you'll love seeing it sparkle with morning dew! Diamond Grass can grow in most light applications from full sun to full shade providing grass plants and grass for garden no matter what the clime or growing environment.
Also known by its botanic name Calamagrostis Brachytricha, this herbaceous perennial can grow up to four feet tall when flowering. With narrow, flat leaves in a line, plumes in the flowers open with a smoky red purple tint. The grass blooms wherever it is planted although it does best in full sun. It grows in moist, fertile soil, but can adapt to a variety of locations. The spread is between 18 and 24 inches with planting done at 24- to 40-inch spacing. It grows moderately fast. Once planted, the beautiful grass catches the early morning light and dew, the grass sparkles as an ornamental. It relaxes in shade and fully blooms in light, standing upwards like soldiers on sentry duty. This perennial provides a great focus for gardens and landscapes working great at the edge of a woody scene. Pruning takes place late in the winter or at the first sign of spring to ensure continued healthy growing in the late summer.
