The stunning 24 – 30 inch spikes of this deep cobalt Blue Cardinal Flower (Lobelia siphilitica) lend intense color to your late-season garden. A North American native, the cardinal flower plant is an important food source for hummingbirds, butterflies and many migrating bird species. Perfect for naturalizing, native plantings, cottage gardens and borders, these blue perennial flowers don't mind wet feet and will thrive in rain gardens and creekside plantings. Gorgeous as cut flowers, the bright blue cardinal flower blossoms are set off handsomely by the toothed, lance-shaped dark green foliage.

Locate your cardinal flower plant in moist, compost-amended soil in partial shade to full sun. These lobelias will thrive in wet environments, even tolerating clay soils, but they do not care for dry soils or thick mulch. Space plants 12 – 18 inches apart and cover loosely. Hardy in zones 4 – 9, they're also marginally hardy in zone 3 when planted in full sun. These low maintenance beauties require little to no care once established, however the blue perennial flowers only live for a few years, so divide declining clumps about every two years to propagate fresh blooms. Pair with other moisture loving flowers such as Joe Pye weed, marsh pink, bee balm, and blue flag iris for a beautiful season-long rain garden. Blooming from mid-summer through the first frost, the tall blue cardinal flower stalks make a striking addition to the autumn landscape, inviting migrating birds and butterflies to the yard.
