Deciduous shrubs with elegant shapes and red, pink or white foliage.
Known for their exotic foliage and bell-shaped blossoms, weigela plants remain a favorite for use in shrub borders and for adding flair to lawns and gardens. The draping stem and elegant shape of weigela plants lends ambiance to any path or entryway, and an extra bit of color to your life via the butterflies and hummingbirds it attracts. Weigelas thrive best in full sun to partial shade, and when planted in well-drained soil. It's recommended to fertilize your weigela shrub once in the early spring, and to shape your plant in the same season; right after blooming, remove dead or weak twigs to ensure your weigela plants look their finest.
Weigela plants can grow between 12 and 24 inches per year, and can reach heights of nine feet tall at maximum, with a width of between three and twelve feet. Each weigela shrub should have 24 to 30 inches of space surrounding it, and placed in hole just big enough for the root ball to protrude from the ground. Weigela plants can resist temperatures found in hardiness zones four through nine, and their foliage can range in color from green, to gold, to white, to rose. Peat moss or other compost added when planting will also provide much-needed nutrients for optimal root development.
