Enjoy the fragrance of lavender all season long.
Enchant your garden with the sweet smell of lavender! Gardeners all over the world love to grow lavender plants, and the reason for their popularity is no mystery: the fragrance of lavender is known for its beauty and calming effect. Depending on the variety, lavender plants can vary in look, including major differences in shape and color. These perennials can be long and studded with frilly, sweet-smelling blooms, or squat and topped with a more traditional looking flower. Plus, lavender are very easy to grow!
Though the plant can tolerate in a variety of environments, it thrives best in full sun and well-drained soil. Lean soil, alkaline or especially chalky, will bring out the most in the lavender plant's oils and fragrance. Lavender is extremely tough and very drought resistant, but for optimal potential, be sure that you toss a handful of compost and water them regularly throughout their first season, but keep them from getting too damp. Dampness caused by wet roots in the winter or high humidity in the summer can damage your plants; make sure that, when planting lavender, you leave plenty of space between each plant for air to flow through and dry them off. Areas where the ground commonly freezes would also benefit from a layer of mulch before the freeze. When properly cared for, these effervescent flowers are a wonder for the senses.
