Hens & Chicks
A favorite succulent perfect for rock gardens or containers.
Carefree and whimsical, hens and chicks (Sempervivum) plants can handle poor soil and near-drought conditions. Plant these succulents in a container or rock garden, and watch them flourish! Hens and chicks are succulents native to Europe and Northern Africa. They sprout close to the ground and grow out in an eye-catching rosette pattern. As they continue to grow, they "hatch" their chicks: each starts as a flower on the main succulent, or "hen." As the buds grow, they form their own roots and settle next to the mother plant.
When planting hens and chicks, it's important to consider location. Hens and chicks prefer rocky, well-drained soil-for this reason, they do best in rock gardens or as potted plants. Perhaps not surprisingly, they thrive in full sunlight and their leaves will rot if excessively watered. They can survive cold nights, but must be moved into greenhouses should winter weather become extreme. Their durable nature makes it possible to cultivate hens and chicks plants in most places in the United States.
