Delphinium

Stately spikes perfect for borders.

Stately and elegant, Delphinium plants send up tall spikes of flowers that make fantastic and eye-catching additions to your cutting garden. These classic flowers come in a variety of colors including blues, reds, pinks, yellows, purples and white, with the rich, indigo true-blue blooms being highly prized by gardeners. Delphinium plants can add vertical interest to a wide range of landscaping designs. A must-have for traditional English cottage gardens, they're equally as lovely in formal settings as in old-fashioned country gardens. As North American natives, they're also well-suited to naturalized, woodland and butterfly gardens.

Delphiniums can be grown in containers, borders, their own beds, or as part of colorful entryways. Excellent cutting flowers, they're spectacular for adding height to mixed bouquets and floral arrangements. It is often possible to coax a second bloom from the cut flowers, if a little sugar is added to the water. Delphinium plants are available in a range of sizes as well as colors, from tidy 2-foot tall varieties to towering 6-foot giants. Taller varieties require staking, while dwarf varieties grow to around 2 feet without leaning. Delphiniums prefer moist, cool summers - choose varieties appropriate for your zone and soil conditions.
